A Whole New Ball Game

It had been a fifty-year drought for the Tigers of Ciego de Ávila, five long decades of futility, of losing to superior teams in Cuba’s top baseball league, of never having a shot at the big show – the Serie Nacional de Béisbol, the country’s equivalent of the World Series. But this year was different. With the Metropolitanos and Industriales – the big teams from Havana – eliminated early, and with a strong roster that included a hot young starting pitcher, the Tigers had finally made it to the finals.
